Governor-General Quentin Bryce talks about the High Suicide Rates of Young Gay and Lesbian

Governor-General Quentin Bryce, who also supports the gay marriage said on Tuesday that gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and intersex Australians were 6x more to be expected to take their own lives compare to normal Australians.

She has spoken out regarding the high suicide rates of gay gender, saying that their fatality is “too high a price to pay”.

“This is too high a price to pay for our young people. We cannot allow another person to be lost,” according to the Governor-General. Governor-General Quentin Bryce

Ms Bryce comments followed by others she made recently, wherein she publicly supported Australia’s gay marriage and to support Australia to become a republic.

Being  the Queen’s representative in Australia, the Governor-General will be retiring in March after  her 5 years in service.

She was in Melbourne on Tuesday to open an e-book by depression awareness group beyondblue.

An e-book titled “Families Like Mine” includes guidance for families of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people.

She said that to hold with your sexual identity was tough. It has the presence of fear of rejection and, especially, the fear of being rejected by their loved ones, which is caused to increase the risk of suicide, anxiety, and self-harm. With a supportive family, it can make things all the difference.

According to Governor-General Quentin Bryce, she was very touched by the families in the stories of the book:

“Everyone here would want all young people to know that they are not alone, that as a society, we do care. They can live rich and rewarding lives but sometimes they just need our support.”

Brock McLean, Carlton Football Club player, has been a supporter for gay footballers. He told about the struggle of his sister Ellie that become visible to him.

He said he has always told himself that if his sister is feeling uncomfortable enough to be who she is around him and believe accepted and loved, he must have failed his role being a brother.

“Many parents out there who desire to love their children and accept them but they just don’t know how,” he added.

The book for him could give families a basis to understand LGBTI people much better and they will also learn how to accept them. The most awful things for a child to hear from their parents is, “We don’t love you anymore.”

McLean said that a lot of of his sister’s friends had been rejected by their parents after they reveal they were gay.
